Following the feedback gathered via the survey undertaken last year, the SSA Sustainability Subcommittee are pleased to announce a series of Case Study focussed in-depth presentations covering various aspects of sustainable design practice. We will be covering a variety of topics, from Passivhaus and new build, to structural engineering design and embodied carbon, and works to existing buildings, amongst other things.

The final touches are being put to an exciting programme of speakers for this series over the upcoming months.

The first in the series will be on Friday the 12th March 2021 from 11am – 12pm.

This presentation will cover an introduction to the Passivhaus Standard, followed by an in-depth description of the construction and post occupancy monitoring of Ostro, a new-build Certified Passivhaus in rural Stirling. This contemporary detached dwelling was largely self-built by the Architect and her partner, and also achieved the Gold Standard as set out in Section 7: Sustainability in the Technical Standards. 

These presentations will be in a digital format and hosted via Zoom.

The Committee has taken the decision to make these events free of charge for all attendees.

We hope that many of you can join us for the first in this new series of Sustainability focused CPD events.

]]> Following the success of Peter Lee’s, of Carmody Groukes, talk on The Hill House Box, temporary enclosure of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s Hill House, at our AGM, we have the fortune and privilege of being able have a preview of its completion in Helensburgh. The tour is due to take place this coming Tuesday, the 28th May at 6pm, numbers may be limited to 30 to keep things manageable.

For those of you who noted early interest, the committee is exploring the possibility of arranging a bus to Hill House and back, details of this will follow shortly. For those of you without travel plans, there will be parking available at Hill House.

We’re sure you can agree this will be a tremendous trip to see a very striking structure protecting the delicate building fabric during The Hill House’s restoration project. It is also an opportunity to see it before it is opened by the public and allowing previously unseen views of a fantastic Mackintosh building.

The Stirling Society of Architects in Partnership with Historic Environment Scotland present a morning series of building blocks on conservation.

Discover the philosophy and ethics of building conservation. Learn how to identify common decay mechanisms and building defects and understand the listing process and what it means for you.

These sessions are run in conjunction with the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

They will appeal to anyone with a working knowledge of buildings who is interested in learning more about traditional structures, including students and professionals.

Conservation 101 is the first in a series of CPD events which will be run quarterly at the Engine Shed in Stirling. They will cover a range of topics.

The Crannog Restaurant sits on a loch side setting at the foot of historic Stirling Castle. Based on the design of a traditional Scottish Crannog, the restaurant and conference centre provides a stunning setting for any event.

Just a cannonball away from the Castle and a minute from the M9 motorway, the Crannog is ideally located for easy access and parking.

Russwood Timber Yard Visit

Visit of Russwood Timber Yard on Friday 7th September 2018.

This popular visit much enjoyed by Architects, is an opportunity to learn more about timber products: their manufacturing, characteristics, use and specifications.

7.36am – Depart Stirling Station by the train to Aviemore. (From Dunblane – 7.43am).

Alternately drive to Russwood located next to Newtonmore railway station.

10.00am – Visit of Russwood Timber Yard

1.00pm – Lunch

Afternoon – Visit of the award winning Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore (open air museum with many 18th to 20th century buildings).

Other options:
• Relaxing in the village of Newtonmore (Setting for the TV series Monarch of the Glen)
• Early return to Stirling after lunch/ morning visit.

End of afternoon – Return to Stirling

Some may like to stay over and spend the weekend in the Highlands with family/ friends (who are welcome to join our party for the day).

The visit of Russwood Timber Yard and the sandwich lunch are free. Transport and afternoon activities are the responsibility of the participants.
